Cattle Market

Aggrey arrived after breakfast all ready to take us to the Cattle Market.

Taxi to Luanda village and then a walk down the road 20minutes to the saleyards - bit different to what Deane is used to in NZ I can tell you! Anyway same principles, but we went past the sale has and sat in front of a shop while Aggrey and Simon went to check out the prices and do some negotiations for half an hour.

Deane was chomping at the bit to go see what cattle they were negotiating for, so after Simon took photos and came back and forward it was decided to buy some younger cattle, there were no milking cows available. We thought two heifers and a bull would be a good start so that Aggrey would be able to breed and increase stock numbers quickly. Deane chose a good line of cattle - size and colours etc so that Aggrey can also lease the bull out at a fee to other villagers for servicing of their heifers/cows.

After negotiations were completed, registration of the sale and purchases was required and the money handed over. Aggrey now holds 3 certificates for stock ownership, which is very proud of.
The stock agent then negotiated a price for the cattle to be walked home - a 2 hour trip and we had to buy new ropes for each animal for transportation!

We suggested that, rather than selling the cow dung, it be kept and used to fertilise a small area for growing their own vegetables as the soil fertility is poor.

Goats were not a good option and they thought it was weird milking a goat and selling it! Chickens carry to many diseases and could be detrimental to the health of the family.
