Athens Refugees #1

Wednesday morning we navigated our way around the streets of Athens to meet up with a local couple that minister to the Syrian Refugees.

(Haven't got tooo lost yet - pocket earth is a great app, you load the city and a starting point to address of the location details while you have wifi and then when you are off wifi it still works, mostly, and tracks you as you go, just got to remember to actually save it while on wifi!

Anyway this organisation is doing a fantastic work with the Syrian refugees, they help them with anything and everything from food, clothing, medical needs to helping with documentation etc, they get alongside them and build relationships.  They share many things with them and give free literature to anyone that wants it, they have signs all around the building saying "everything is free". We originally thought this was purely a humanitarian organisation, but it definitely is not, there is so much we could tell you about the stories & work but to protect everyone we are unable to blog it!!

They have a large building where people come everyday, when started 5 years ago they originally had 300 people a day but their food supplies ran out so fast they had to stop distributing food but now they still have 100 people in & out a day!!!!  Mental health issues and Depression counselling are the greatest needs.

Many refugees have been through this organisation and relocated to European countries, as Greece can't let everyone stay & there are no jobs here BUT they say 80% of the refugees that have gone are either depressed or on drugs/alcohol because they find it so hard to intergrateinto this new European culture!!

Visas for Greece are fairly hard to get and to be part of this ministry we would need to learn Arabic!!!
