13th August – Queen Elizabeth National Park

We woke up after a reasonable sleep and had relaxing breakfast. We decided to do the Kazinga Chanel launch ride so booked in for the 3pm session. We left the lodge driving through the National Park (no wildlife sightings tho) and then turned off to the Gate entrance to the Park. We drove down 20kms dirt road to the water edge and got on the launch. The launch took us on the chanel for 2 hours, we saw three HUGE elephants only 10metres away, heaps of water buffalo, hippopotamus’ and a large crocodile. There is heaps of warthogs and an amazing variety of birdlife. We even saw a hyena. We returned to the car and drive around the National Park tracks for an hour – with only sightings of warthogs and another elephant. We left the park on another road and stopped beside some elephants behind a bush – Zach decided he needed a stop – but as soon as he got out of the vehicle the elephant turned and came towards him!!! 15 metres away at the most, he was back in the car in 2 seconds flat!!! The elephant was huge.
A little disappointed with the sparse numbers of animals and of course, everyone BUT us saw the lions, they were hanging out in the opposite part of the Park each of the 3 times we visited!
