Deane left early with Simon and Alex for Kubamitwe Monday, he had local workers coming back to help finish digging the holes and then concrete the strainer posts into the holes dug prior to the weekend. Loads of sand and aggregate were placed around the boundary and two wheel barrows of hand mixed concrete were needed for each hole, some loads had to be barrowed 1/2km from the place were the concrete was made to the actual strainer hole. Deane said the guys worked so hard and at 7pm they showered and had a sandwich before dropping into bed, only to be annoyed by another RAT, of larger proportions this time, glad I wasn’t there!!!!
Zach, Sam Bri and I are at home in Mukono for the week, catching up on schooling, emails, blog, washing, cleaning and trying to get the freezer filled with some meals in preparation of the Majors arriving one week today (actually as I type, in one week we will be returning with them from the airport!!!). Everyone keeps saying how excited the Majors are, I keep thinking not ½ as excited as the Graingers’, it will be such a HUGE blessing and encouragement for us and great to sit and chat with a NZer!!!!
We are busy planning also how we can fit in the most activities and show the Majors the most of our Ugandan life as possible in a week. Trouble is everything takes so long and car travel isn’t quick in this country. I remember my first look at lots of the places, situations and people (that seem so familiar to us now and sometimes feel so sad that I don’t even feel shocked to see them anymore) as you drive along, so Im sure they will be totally shocked, just like us, as to the homes and how some people live and just survive.
Have just talked to Deane and he informs me they finished concreting the last of the 19 strainer holes before lunch. They were stopping for lunch and then putting up the string line to get a start this afternoon on the post holes, so progress is going well. Work is extremely tiring in the hot sun and everything you do here is so manual!!!!
